Seth Thomas and Other 19th Century Collectible Mantel Clocks

By: Jeffrey Wright

Great homes around the world have enjoyed the added comfort and atmosphere of mantel clocks for generations giving most of us fond memories of seeing one of these fine pieces of craftsmanship atop a fireplace or parlor desk as a child.

Even today many families still maintain that antique appeal in their homes by having a mantel clock as part of the décor.  The most common form was placed upon a mantel of a fireplace but progressed to include some exquisite pieces that were made to be hung on the wall or as it went “wall clocks”.

The original mantel clock was produced around 1816 and was only found in the fine homes of the wealthy and soon became a status symbol of having money and prominence in the community.

The better designs of the 1800’s mantel clocks still have their beautiful craftsmanship and working components of spring and gears keeping perfect time to this day.

One of the best known and most renowned crafters of mantel clocks was a man known as Seth Thomas.  He started crafting clocks around 1813 and soon perfected the art and became THE brand for owning a fine mantel clock.

This demand for his Seth Thomas mantel clocks gave them the notoriety of good quality and opened the doors to mantel clocks becoming highly collectible.

This trend has grown over the past 200 years developing a vast population of mantel clock enthusiasts and avid collectors setting the precedent for collectible mantel clocks being acquired from around the world.

With the use of the internet and online shopping you can now find many fascinating collectible mantel clocks from antiques to more up to date or retro models ranging in various prices from as little as $20 and up into the $1000’s for some of the more classical collectible mantel clocks.

You should also take caution and make sure to only purchase your collectible mantel clock from a reputable source and be sure of the quality offered by the seller when buying antique collectible mantel clocks.

I found this an issue when I first started collecting mantel clocks and always was searching for that safe place to get that perfect deal on that perfect collectible mantel clock and was lucky after many bad experiences to find this site for the most vast variety of collectible mantel clocks ranging from the high end antique Seth Thomas 19th century mantel clocks to the more affordable mantel clocks either way the only place to check out collectible mantel clocks.
